Duo: Quick Start Guide

At Carleton, we use a service called Duo to provide more security to your account. Duo provides 2-factor authentication, protecting your account from threat actors by requiring a push notification on your phone, or a security code from a Duo fob in addition to your regular username and password.

Setting Up Two Factor Authentication

  1. If you are new to Duo at Carleton, and if Duo is required for your account, you will see a prompt to begin setting up Duo when you log into your Carleton account. Click Start setup and then follow the prompts

  2. Select the device you would like to set up (links open in a new page)

    1. Smartphone

    2. Tablet

    3. Duo Key-Fob (can be requested from ITS)

  3. Configure a backup device, if possible: Adding a new Device

Duo also provides an illustrated guide to device set-up. Note that they have options for more types of devices than Carleton supports.

Choose an Authentication Method

Use one of the following authentication methods on your configured device to login. For more information about these options, please see our guide on DUO Authentication Methods (guide opens in a new tab).

  1. Duo Push Notification (Strongly Encouraged)

  2. Duo Fob (Upon request, ITS can supply you with a fob to use to authenticate)
