Upgrading to macOS 13: Unlocking System Preferences

After upgrading the macOS on T2 Apple Hardware, some users cannot unlock their System Preferences.  This applies to most Touch Bar MacBook Pros and was a known issue in macOS Big Sur.  It may be in an issue in other upgrades as well

  1. After you upgrade your macOS, go to the Apple menu in the upper left corner of the screen and select System Preferences (macOS 11-12) or System Settings (macOS 13)

  2. Click on Users & Groups.

  3. If you have:

    • macOS 11-12

      1. Click the lock to make changes

      2. Enter your password. If your password is not accepted, follow these instructions to reset your SMC.

    • macOS 13

      • Click Add Account

      • Enter your password and click Unlock. If your password is not accepted, follow these instructions to reset your SMC.

      • Click Cancel

      • Go back to the General tab of System Settings
