Overview

Discover how to add media (images, videos, and audio) to your Moodle course using the methods below.

Text and media areas

The Text and media area Moodle resource  can be used to display images and playable audio/videos on the course page. Since Text and media areas are essentially text boxes, media can usually be added to other text boxes using Method 2.

Method 1 - Drag and drop

  1. Turn Edit mode on in the top right corner
  2. Drag and drop your media from wherever it is saved on your computer (Desktop/File Explorer/Browser Downloads) to the section you’d like to add it to.
  3. Select Add media to course page
  4. Your media will be automatically added as a Text and media area

Method 2 - Manually create a text and media area

  1. Turn Edit mode on in the top right corner
  2. Click Add an activity or resource and select Text and media area
    • For Images
      1. While editing the Text and media area, click the button in the text box toolbar
      2. Either paste the image's URL or select Browse repositories and upload your image
      3. Write a description for the image
      4. Use the size boxes to scale the image to your preference
        1. Keep Auto size to avoid stretching the image
      5.  Click Save image
    • For Videos
      We recommend using Panopto for recording videos.  But you can also record a video button within Moodle if you're in hurry.
      1. Attach an existing video by clicking the  button in the text box toolbar
      2. Go to the Video tab,
        • either paste the video's URL (e.g. YouTube) or
        • select Browse repositories and upload a video from your computer
      3. Under Display options, you can add a title and adjust the size of the video
      4. Click Insert media
    • For Audio
      • To record and attach a short audio file: click the  button
      • To add an existing audio file:
        1. click the button in the text box toolbar
        2.  Go to the Audio tab,
          • either paste the audio's URL or
          • select Browse repositories and upload your audio
        3. Under Display options, you can add a title
        4. Click Insert media
  3. Click Save and return to course

Files

Files are used to add media to your course page as a resource to be opened/downloaded by a student.

Method 1 - Drag and drop

  1. Turn edit mode on for your course page
  2. Drag and drop your media from wherever it is saved on your computer (Desktop/File Explorer/Browser Downloads)
  3. Select Create file resource
  4. Your media will be automatically added as a file

Method 2 - Manually create a file​​

  1. Turn edit mode on for your course page
  2. Click Add an activity or resource and select File
  3. ​Upload your media to the file box.
  4. Under the Appearance section, pick a display method from the drop-down menu
  5. Click one of the Save options

Panopto

Panopto can be used in your Moodle page to host and play videos.

STEP 1

To add a Panopto video as a course page resource:

  1. Turn Edit mode on in the top right corner
  2. Click Add an activity or resource and select Insert Panopto Video
  3. Click Select content

To insert Panopto videos into any text box:

  1. Click the green Panopto icon on the text box toolbar
  2. Select Insert Panopto Video

STEP 2

After following either of these methods, you will see a screen which prompts you with three choices: Choose, Upload, and Record

  1. Choose: If you have already uploaded your video to Panopto separately, select it here
  2. Upload: If you have the video file on your computer, either drag and drop it or upload it here
  3. Record: You can record yourself/capture your screen from this menu either from your browser or the Panopto desktop application

STEP 3

After you select a video,

  1. a Video Embed Options menu will appear where you can adjust aspect ratio, height/width, and the starting time stamp
  2. Then, click Insert
  3. Lastly, click one of the Save options
