Migrating St. Olaf Email Only - Limited option

The following steps are for migrating your St. Olaf email, only.  For a complete Google Workspace migration see our Leaving St. Olaf knowledge base article.

Migration requires a personal Gmail account. To sign up for a free Gmail account, visit www.google.com/gmail/about/

  1. Log in to your St. Olaf Gmail account using your St. Olaf username and password. Select the Settings icon (looks like a gear) in the upper right corner, then select Settings.

  2. Select the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab, and in the POP Download section, select Enable POP for all mail:

  3. Select Save Changes at the bottom, then log out of your St. Olaf Gmail account.

  4. Next, log in to your personal Gmail account. Select the Settings icon in the upper right corner, then select Settings.

  5. Choose the Accounts and Import tab. In the Check mail from other accounts section, select Add a mail account:

  6. In the Add a mail account pop-up window, enter your full St. Olaf email address and select Next:

  7. Enter your full St. Olaf email address as your Username.
Because Google 2-Step Verification is turned on, your normal St. Olaf password WILL NOT WORK. You will need to generate a special app password for this migration service. Full how-to information can be found at support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833. Leave the default settings for the POP Server and the checkboxes:

  8. Select Add Account.
If you receive the error: “This account cannot be imported now. Please try again later.” Make sure the option “Leave a copy of retrieved message on the server” is DESELECTED.

  9. When asked if you would like to be able to send email as your St. Olaf email, change the selection to No. This feature will not work once your St. Olaf account is deactivated:

  10. Select Finish. Gmail will begin downloading past messages from your St. Olaf Gmail account and they will appear within your inbox as they load. This process can take a long time depending on the number of messages being migrated.

Your Gmail account will continue to check and download messages from your St. Olaf account until it is deactivated.
