BitLocker: Installation and Setup

Carleton requires BitLocker to be enabled on Windows laptops to increase security.  BitLocker encrypts the data stored on the computer, so that if the computer is lost/stolen it is more difficult to get data off of it.  For you as the user of the computer, you will see the blue BitLocker screen whenever you turn on your computer after it has turned off, at which point you'll enter your BitLocker PIN/password. This is a separate password than your normal Carleton password.

Set up BitLocker

  1. If you are off campus, connect to the VPN

  2. Open the Windows menu and search for BitLocker

  3. Select Manage BitLocker

  4. Confirm the default options and set your preferred BitLocker password when prompted

  5. Click Turn on BitLocker

  6. Restart the computer to finalize the BitLocker setup

As your computer starts up, you should see a light blue screen with a text box for you to enter your BitLocker password (you may wish to set this to be the same as your .\admin password)
