Setting Moodle Grade Item Categories

Moodle grade items can be assigned to a category through their settings when creating or editing activities and manual items, and can also be moved individually or in bulk from the the Grade setup page.

Using the grade item's settings

While manually created grade items' settings are all controlled through the gradebook interface, some settings for Moodle activities, such as parent category and maximum grade, can only be modified through that activity's setting page. See below for specific instructions on how to modify the settings for the parent category for each type.

Changing parent category through Moodle activity settings

To access the parent category setting for a Moodle activity, go to that activity by clicking on its link on the main Moodle page, or its name in the Moodle gradebook or gradebook setup page. From the activity's main page, click on the settings wheel in the upper right corner of the screen.

On the settings page, scroll down to the Grade header and expand that section by clicking on the arrow next to Grade. Click on the drop-down menu next Grade category and select the desired parent category for the activity and save.

Changing the parent category through manual grade item settings

For manually created grade items, all settings are controlled from the settings page accessed through the Moodle Gradebook setup page. Clicking Edit and then Edit settings in the Actions column for a grade item will bring you to this page.

On the settings page, go to the Parent category section, and select the desired category from the Grade category drop-down menu.

Setting categories/moving grade items on the gradebook setup page

If you create a grade category after grade items for it have already been created, or if you need to move grade items to different categories or subcategories, you can always do this through the Gradebook setup page. This is also the easiest way to move multiple grade items at once. To do this, access the Gradebook setup page (click on Grades in the left side menu, and then the Setup tab), and find the grade item(s) you wish to move. For each item to be moved, click on the checkbox in the far right column (under Select), and then scroll to the bottom of the page and expand the drop-down menu next to Move selected items to. Select the new category, and the page will automatically update and refresh, showing the item(s) in the new category.
