Requesting New Moodle Plugins

We can sometimes add plug-ins to Moodle for extra tools and functionality. The official Moodle website offers a directory of potential plugins that are available.

Please note that plugin requests are approved on a case by case basis. All plug-ins are tested before they are added to the St. Olaf Moodle website. The Moodle Team reserves the right to approve or deny requests based on security concerns or impacts to the stability of Moodle.

When plugins are installed, this does not ensure that they are permanent. If updates are made that make it less compatible to our Moodle pages, they may be removed at a later date.

What do plugins do?

Plugins enable Moodle to perform functions it was originally not able to do. For the most part, this impacts all Moodle courses with very few exceptions.

One example of a plugin currently installed on Moodle is the Roster plugin that enables us to become familiar with the participants in a course before it starts. By clicking the Learning mode off/on buttons, we can practice associating names with pictures.

How do I request new plugins?

New plugins are typically implemented during the summer term, but requests can be submitted anytime for review. In very rare cases are new plugins added during the academic year as it could potentially impact all Moodle sites.

To request plugin, contact the Moodle team. Including the following details can be helpful in reviewing the request:

  • What problem are you trying to solve with this plugin and how you plan to use it?
  • Any links to the information that you have come across.
  • Have you seen this plugin used on Moodle sites at other institutions?
