Carleton used to offer a home directory for personal or professional file storage on a network share called HOME. A component of this structure was a folder named webpub which provided the option to post files to the internet via a very basic website. This website was accessible at the URL people.carleton.edu/~username.
The HOME folder has long since been replaced by cloud services such as Google Drive or Dropbox. Similarly, the webpub folder is no longer supported and will be eliminated entirely on July 1st, 2025. Websites or web hosting are now supported by the Academic Technologists (for academic sites) or Web Services (for more general sites).
Removing Files from WebPub
Members of the community who still have files stored in their webpub folder will have received an email in April 2025 with the subject line "Action Required: WebPub Service Discontinuing July 1, 2025; Reply by May 2". In that email are details on what steps need to be taken in order to transition from 'webpub' to a new, supported service. Those that simply wish to retrieve the contents of their webpub folder rather than moving to a new service can do so. However it is not as simple as opening a folder on their computer. Please contact the ITS Helpdesk for assistance.
For those that are comfortable and wish to take care of this themselves, here is the information necessary:
-
Server/Hostname: webpub-prod.its.carleton.edu
-
Username: your regular Carleton username (not your email address) e.g. fschiller
-
Password: your regular Carleton password
