Extempore: Tutorials for Faculty and Students

Tags Extempore

Extempore has extensive documentation and an asynchronous course that guides users through the tool.

For Students:

Extempore is a third-party application connected with Moodle.  Its primary purpose is to give you opportunities to practice your written, listening, and spoken language skills through assignments that use text, images, video, and audio files.  You may be asked to read or listen to short examples and then repeat to practice pronunciation, respond to conversational prompts, or answer questions about what you saw or heard.  You will record your answers and submit them for review, and you will be able to review feedback.

Accessing Extempore

Your teacher will give you hyperlink to their course in Extempore.  Using either Google Chrome or Firefox, click the link and then use the Google Login button to authenticate into Extempore.  Extempore will ask permission to access your microphone and camera.  You will need your microphone; you may also need to enable your camera, depending on the assignments.

Once in Extempore, you select the class for your assignment and start working on Active assignments.

Note:  Consider whitelisting noreply@extemporeapp.com for your Gmail account to ensure you receive any emails from the system (e.g., notifications about feedback received).

Check out this page with some quick tips on what to expect, for troubleshooting, see Extempore's FAQ page.

Using Extempore for your Language Assignments

The assignment will show the prompt on the left-hand side and the space for you to respond on the right-hand side.  Once you have read the instructions and listened to the prompt, click on Record, wait for the countdown timer, record your response and submit.

You may have the opportunity to try the exercise multiple times, but you may also be limited to finishing an exercise in a certain amount of time.

Checking your Feedback and Grades

You can check on specific feedback by going back into your Extempore class and clicking on the Completed button in the top navigation.

If you are asked to resubmit an assignment for additional practice, you may find a new copy of the assignment with a new due date.

How to create a filter in your email

You whitelist an email by creating a filter for it:

  1. In your Gmail account, go to the Settings gear, All settings, and find Filters and Blocked Addresses.
  2. Create a New Filter
  3. Copy noreply@extemoreapp.com into the From field.
  4. On the next screen, select either Never send it to Spam, Star it, or Apply the label (choose your own label).
  5. Create the filter

For Faculty:

Extempore is no longer provided as a tool in Moodle, but you can easily post the link to your Extempore class on your Moodle page.

We have moved to a stand-alone instance of Extempore that uses Google authentication. To create your teacher account in this new instance, go to https://napi.extemporeapp.com/new/ccgsoo and use the "Sign up with Google" button to login.  If you have trouble getting logged in, please contact Academic Technology for assistance by using the button in the upper right of this page.
