Practicing Safe Email

Note: If you have any questions on the following information, please don't hesitate to contact the ITS Helpdesk via our support portal at go.carleton.edu/helpdesk, by phone at 507-222-5999, or through email at helpdesk@carleton.edu.

1) Don't open email attachments unless you are expecting them.

2) Don't reply to requests to email your Carleton username or password to anyone. ITS will NEVER ask you for your password via email.

3) Beware of requests for personal information, including your name, username, password, etc. Especially beware of email messages with links to non-Carleton sites, asking you to provide any personal information, including your name, username, password, etc.

Phishing

Unfortunately, the people who send these "phishing" scam messages will continue to get better and better at fooling us. It's impossible to stay ahead of them. Mostly we need to stay alert and react appropriately.

One thing you can do is click three dots and then click the hook. For general spam, you can click the exclamation point button that reports spam.

Ways to Identify Illegitimate Emails

  1. The sender does not have a Carleton email address
  2. Unusual reply-to email address
  3. Suspicious subject lines
  4. Unusual greetings
  5. Suspicious links
  6. Bad grammar or spelling
