Google 2-Step Verification - Traveling

Before leaving campus for an extended period of time, whether traveling within the United States or internationally, you should review your Google 2-Step Verification settings. If needed, set up appropriate alternative second steps before you travel.

Step 1: Review What You Have Configured

Follow these steps to check your current Google 2-Step Verification settings:

  1. Login to your St. Olaf Google account at myaccount.google.com
  2. Select Security from the menu on the left.
  3. Under "Signing in to Google", select 2-Step Verification. Enter your password and select NEXT.
  4. Review the list of second steps you have configured.

Step 2: Determine What Will Work When You Travel

Review which second steps will work when you travel as some may not work for your situation. Set up alternative second steps before you travel.

Backup Codes

  • Backup codes will work anywhere.
  • This is the simplest method and doesn’t rely on a device.
  • We strongly recommend printing out a set of backup codes before you travel and bringing them with you.

Google Authenticator App (Cell Phone)

  • You WILL travel with your cell phone.
  • Will not work if you are using a different cell phone at your destination.

Google Prompt (Cell Phone)

  • You WILL travel with your cell phone.
  • Requires either cellular data service or WiFi at your destination.
  • Will not work if you are using a different cell phone at your destination.

Landline (Voice Call)

  • When traveling, you will not be able to receive voice calls on your landline (phone) because it is tied to a physical location.
  • You can leave it configured, but will not be able to use it while traveling.

Voice or Text Message (Cell Phone)

  • You WILL travel with your cell phone.
  • Requires cellular service at your destination.
  • If you will be obtaining a cell phone for use at your destination (common with international travelers), you can configure this cell phone as a backup phone.
