This article provides a general introduction to the Course Setting of a Moodle course.

Overview

The course settings page can seem overwhelming with its wide variety of options; this article aims to alleviate some of that anguish by highlighting the most frequently changed settings in this page.

Course Settings Page

To view your course settings, click on the Settings tab located at the top of the page, just below the course title. The list below is not all encompassing; you are welcome to explore other settings not mentioned in this article by clicking on the question () icon next to the setting type.

General section

  • Course full name: The name of the course as displayed on the dashboard.
  • Course visibility: Make the course visible or hidden to students.
  • Course start date: The date after which the course is considered a current or future course on the dashboard. Additional notes below:
    • The start date does NOT affect students' access to the course.
    • In the Weekly course format, where sections are date-based, the start date determines and highlights the current week of the course.
    • By default, the start date of all Moodle courses are set to the first day of classes for the term associated with the course.
  • Course end date: The date after which the course is considered a past course on the dashboard. Additional notes below:
    • The end date does NOT affect students' access to the course.
    • By default, the end date of all Moodle courses are automatically calculated by the 10-week term calendar.

Description section

  • Course image: The image displayed on the course page and Moodle dashboard.
  • Course summary: A brief description of the course displayed on the dashboard in the Summary view.

Course format section

  • Format: The way the content of the course is organized. Please refer to the Moodle: Course Themes and Formats article to read more about the different kinds of course formats.

Appearance section

  • Force theme: Customize the overall appearance of the course. Please refer to the Moodle: Course Themes and Formats article to read more about course theme options.
  • Show gradebook to students: Choose whether or not students can see the gradebook.

Completion tracking section

  • Enable completion tracking: When turned on, completion conditions can be set per activity. For more information, please read the Moodle: Activity Completion article.

Groups section

  • Group mode: The group mode set at course level is the default mode for all activities. For more information, please read the Moodle: Groups and Grouping article.
  • Force group mode: If the group mode is forced at course level, it CANNOT be changed within an activity.
