Biometric authentication (fingerprint and facial recognition) provides a fast, secure alternative to traditional passwords.
Windows (PC)
Windows uses Windows Hello to manage biometrics.
-
Select the Start menu and select Settings (gear icon).
-
Go to Accounts > Sign-in options.
-
Choose your method:
-
Facial recognition (Windows Hello): Select Set up and follow the prompts to "Get started."
-
Fingerprint recognition (Windows Hello): Select Set up, then touch the sensor repeatedly as directed.
-
Windows requires a backup PIN before you can enable biometrics. If you haven't created one, you will be prompted to do so during setup.
-
Under Sign-in options, uncheck “Automatically dismiss the lock screen if Windows recognizes your face” and check “Enhance facial recognition protection.”
Apple Mac
On macOS, biometric security is called Touch ID. Currently, Apple does not offer Face ID on MacBooks or iMacs (it is exclusive to iPhone and iPad).
-
Open System Settings.
-
Scroll down the sidebar and select Touch ID & Password.
-
Select Add Fingerprint and enter your system password.
-
Place your finger on the Touch ID sensor (usually at the top right of the keyboard) repeatedly until the scan is complete.
Mobile (iOS & Android)
iPhone & iPad
Depending on your model, you will use either Face ID or Touch ID.
-
Open Settings.
-
Tap Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode).
-
Tap Set Up Face ID or Add a Fingerprint.
-
Follow the on-screen instructions (rotating your head for Face ID or lifting/resting your finger for Touch ID).
Android
While menus vary by manufacturer (Samsung, Pixel, etc.), the general path is:
-
Open Settings.
-
Tap Security (or Security and privacy).
-
Tap Biometrics.
-
Select Face recognition or Fingerprints.
-
Follow the registration wizard.
