Moodle: Using Notability to Give Student Feedback

Summary

Using the Notability app on your iPad, you can easily add handwritten notes to student work. This article explains how to add students' work to Notability, and how to return the files as feedback on Moodle.

Body

Student file submissions can be exported from Moodle and marked in Notability on your iPad. Once marked, these files can be re-uploaded to Moodle as feedback for students.

Downloading Student Submissions

  1. Click View all submissions
  2. Un-check the box labeled Download submissions in folders
  3. Click Download all submissions
    1. The submissions will appear in a zip file
  4. Click Save to Files
  5. Open the Files app and locate the zip file from Moodle
  6. Tap on the zip file
    1. This will create a folder containing the files you want to mark up

Marking Submissions in Notability

  1. Open Notability
  2. Slick on the + symbol next to Subjects
  3. Add a new subject for the assignment you are grading
  4. Tap and hold + New > Import > Files
  5. Tap the folder containing student submissions
  6. Select the submissions you would like to mark in Notability
    1. Once you select one file, you can tap Select All in the bottom left corner to quickly add every file
  7. Import each document to separate notes (this is the default)
  8. Select the subject you created for this assignment
  9. Mark up each submission

Uploading Marked Files to Moodle

  1. Save your notes to Files on your iPad
    1. Tap the menu button 
    2. Tap Select Notes
    3. Tap Select all at the bottom of the screen, or select individual submissions
    4. Tap share icon at the bottom
    5. Tap Share > Save to files
  2. Create a zip containing the notes
    1. Open Files
    2. Select marked up submissions
    3. Tap More > Compress
  3. Upload zip to Moodle as feedback
    1. Navigate back to the assignment on Moodle
    2. Select View all submissions
    3. From the Grading action drop-down menu, select upload multiple feedback files in a zip 
    4. Tap Choose a file > choose file > choose file
    5. Select the zip folder downloaded from Notability 
    6. Click Upload this file > Import feedback files > confirm > continue
  4. Students will now be able to view your feedback for the assignment on Moodle
