Introduction
Omeka functions both as a repository for items and also as a place to display “Exhibits.” As such, we will be showing two main ways of embedding playable files.
Initial Set Up
Prior to embedding any media, you will most likely need to disable HTML filtering, or else it may not work. To do this you will need to
- Go to Settings, found at the top of your Omeka site in the toolbar
- Click on the tab that is labeled as SiteSecurity
- Scroll down and make sure that the checkbox that's labeled "Enable HTML Filtering" is unchecked
You will then need to make sure that you have an item that you wish to embed. In order to find an embedding, go back to where you originally found your audiovisual, and look for “embed” code. In YouTube, this is available under “Share” for example. The code will probably start with “<iframe” like this:
Save this snippet, since we will need it for later.
Embed into an Item
In order to embed an audiovisual in Omeka you will first need to make sure that you are familiar with adding items in an Omeka Site. Please check out our article on Adding Items to Omeka if you're not yet familiar with how to go about doing this.
Once you're familiar with adding items to Omeka, to embed an audiovisual into an item you will want to either edit, or create a new item. Either while creating, or while editing your item, you will want to decide under which metadata field you will want to embed your audiovisual. For example:
- Go to the Reference metadata field
- Enable the checkbox that says "Use HTML" under that metadata field
- Click on the "Source Code" button (i.e the icon that looks like two angle brackets (“<>”))
- An HTML Source Editor box will pop up. Paste the iframe code (the snippet from earlier) into that source editor box
- Click "Okay" to save and exit the source code.
- Finally, fill in any additional metadata fields and click "Save Changes" which can be found in either the right or bottom of the page.
Embed into an Exhibit & Simple Page
Below are the instructions for embedding into an Exhibit Page
ℹ️ If you want to create a Simple Page, the process would be very similar - simply add a new page and then check the “Use HTML Editor” checkbox and you’ll be all set.
- Back in your Omeka site, go to the “Exhibits” section and either add an exhibit or edit the exhibit where you wish to embed the video.
- At the bottom of the exhibit management page, select the Page where you want to embed the video or “Add Page” if you would like to add it to a new page.
- Pages are made up of “content blocks.” Any of the content blocks that you choose will work for this, so select a content block that works well for your plans.
- Look for the section in the content block titled “Text” and click the icon that looks like two angle brackets (“<>”).
- An HTML Source Editor box will pop up. Paste the iframe code (the snippet from earlier) into that source editor box
- Click "Okay" to save and exit the source code.
- Finally, click on "Save Changes" which can be found in either the right or bottom of the page.
