HEIC or High-Efficiency Files
The high-efficiency setting on the iPhone allows for pictures and videos to maintain a high resolution, but take up less storage space on the device. However, this can cause some compatibility issues when working between iOS and Windows.
In most cases, if Windows is unable to open HEIC files, these can be viewed in the browser version of Google Drive. Some software platforms may also have difficulty opening HEIC file types.
Turn off HEIC Settings
To turn off the high-efficiency setting in iOS so images are saved in JPEG format:
- On the iPhone or iPad, click on Settings
- Scroll down to Camera
- Scroll down the window to Formats
- Select the option for Most Compatible
Any photos taken after the setting update will now be in JPEG format.
This will not automatically convert already-taken photos into JPEG - if you need assistance with converting photos from HEIC to a different file type, contact to the DiSCO.
