You can set up a Google Meet video conference's access to behave similar to Zoom's Waiting Room feature. This article goes over how to set this up prior to the meeting or in the meeting as well as how to join meetings with a waiting room.
Enabling a waiting room when creating a meeting

Create a new calendar event, and select add Google Meet video conferencing

Click on the Settings icon to open the meet settings.

Under Meeting Access, select Restricted and click Save.

Share the Meeting Code with anyone you would like to enter a waiting room to join a meeting - do NOT add them to the calendar invitation to invite them as this will allow them to bypass the waiting room.

- Click on the Host Controls icon in the lower right corner of the Meet window.
- Selected Restricted.
Joining a Meeting with a Waiting Room

To join a meeting using this code, any user can go to meet.google.com and look for where to enter a code to join. This includes external, non-Google users.

Enter the code and request to join.

The meeting host will be notified and can choose to admit or deny entry.
